Pixels: The Art of iPhone

This is an open call for submissions for the Pixels: The Art of iPhone Photography exhibition.

An open call for iPhonographic art to be exhibited at the Orange County Center For Contemporary Art, March 31-April 3o, 2011. Existing Pixels’ artists will shortly receive an email regarding submitting pictures already on the site and other submission options.

All photos MUST be shot with and processed using an Apple iPhone.  No computer-based processing allowed.  Any model of the iPhone may be used. Any image found to be taken with another device or processed on a computer or iPad will result in entrant being disqualified and forfeiture of entry fee.

Winning entries will be printed and exhibited in the month-long exhibition. There will be a full-color program printed with all works, which will be available for sale.

To be eligible for the OCCCA/Pixels exhibition, you must first be a registered artist on this site. Register (form in right column) with a valid email account that is tied to your PayPal account, please. If you are new to Pixels: The Art of the iPhone, you should probably also read our general submissions guidelines.

We will be exhibiting a minimum of sixty images from this open call for submissions.

Submissions will be accepted until midnight, February 27, 2011. When you pay the fee, you will be directed to a page where you will upload your five images. If you wish to upload more images, you will need to pay another $30.00.

If you are a regular and active contributor to Pixels: The Art of the iPhone and have had an image published after Dec. 1, 2010, you will be receiving an email detailing other submissions options for the exhibition. (We have forty slots for Pixels’ artists).

If chosen, we will print your picture as an archival 13″x19″ giclée print on Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Matte paper, image are approx 10.5″x14″ or 10.5″ square and mounted on archival foamcore with a two inch border. Some images will be printed in a larger format, as well, as determined by judges.

There will be a full-color catalog with all images in the show published, available for sale.

Prints will be available for sale at the exhibit. We are instating a minimum price of $100 (which the artist may raise if he or she so wishes) which will be split between the artist and OCCCA (60%/40%). In the event that more than one print is sold of an image, a $30 printing charge will be deducted from price of print, then split between artist and OCCCA.

Judging submissions will be Jeff Alu (OCCCA), Knox Bronson (Pixels), Maia Panos and Daniel Berman (artists).

Deadline for submissions: February 27, midnight.
Selections will be announced within a week.

Catalyst, UCI's on-campus undergraduate art gallery, in conjunction with Cal State Fullerton art students, 

is looking for student artwork from both campuses to be displayed February 17 - March 4, 2011. 

We accept works of any medium such as painting, drawing,

Catalyst is a student-run project space, art gallery, and pedagogic platform devoted to exposing students to the process of making, curating and displaying artwork. Through exhibitions, workshops, peer critiques, lectures, and field-trips, we hope to connect the student population across different disciplines in order to foster critical, artistic, and social growth on a campus often stratified by areas of study. The winner of this competition will be the inaugural exhibit for our new 4,000 square foot gallery at 102 West Fifth Street—directly across from our current location!

LACDA 2011 INTERNATIONAL JURIED COMPETITION

Jurors:

Enter our juried competition for digital art and photography. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

Registration fee is $30US (three images).
Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44x60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery from March 10-April 2, 2011. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24x36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. Second place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within twelve months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have already been included in our exhibits.

Winners Announced: February 21, 2011
Exhibit Dates: March 10-April 2, 2011

Artist's Reception: March 10, 7-9pm. The artist's reception will be the opening gala at our new expanded location in conjunction with the Downtown Art Walk which is attended by up to 20,000 gallery goers.

About the jurors:

EDWARD ROBINSON is the Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He curated the Los Angeles presentation of New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, co-curated The Sum of Myself: Photographic Self-Portraits from the Audrey and Sydney Collection, and is working on the upcoming exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera (Fall, 2010). New media components of these exhibitions include commissioning a video installation by the Center for Land Use Intrepretation on the theme of oil in the landscape; 'Testament' by Nathalie Bookchin, a meditation on the collective self-portrait garnered by on-line vlogging; and the presentation of Eggleston's video work, Stranded in Canton. He contributes regularly to LACMA's blog, Unframed, including a recent series of video interviews with LA-based photographers. He earned his PhD at Oxford University in the History of Art and Photography and his BA in Art History at Brown University. Formerly the Beaumont and Newhall Curatorial Fellow in the Dept. of Photography at MoMA, he initiated and organized over four years a number of exhibitions and programs. He has collaborated with such artists as Reneke Dijkstra, Nan Goldin, Stuart Klipper, Boris Mihailov, Vik Muniz, Mark Steinmetz, and Beat Streuli. He has served as well as the editor of Blind Spot magazine, has published a number of articles on photographic history, and has taught at New York University and Yale University.

 

 

REX BRUCE is the founder and director of Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. He founded the digital program at Artists Television Access (San Francisco) for which he curated exhibits and created curriculum. He received his masters from SFSU in Interdisciplinary Art where he also taught and developed curriculum for many years. His work has been shown internationally for over twenty years. Most recently he has emerged as a significant artist and organizer in the burgeoning Renaissance in downtown Los Angeles as well as becoming a leader in the exploding international scene revolving around art and technology. Video and photography from his current series have been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Laznia Center for Contemporary Art (Poland), Guggenheim Gallery (Chapman University), California Museum of Photography (U.C. Riverside), New Media Center Santa Ana, Found Gallery, Start SOMA San Francisco, Center for Political Graphics (L.A.), Niche.LA Video Art, Silver Lake Film Festival, Downtown Film Festival–Los Angeles, photoLA, photoSF, and LACDA.
