Meet Alyssa. She grew up in Montana, lives in Long Beach and recently bought an artwork by SMASH. She is the newest writer for the OC Art Blog. -KrystalEarlier this year Laguna Art Museum presented a third installment of the OsCene, featuring a fresh collective of artists representing the arts in Orange County. This summer Grand Central Art Center, in Santa Ana, is revisiting a past exhibition and asked 100 artists, once again, to see Satan. More than a tribute to the ultimate villain, this time around, 100 Artists See Satan is organized as a fundraiser to raise money for the art center. Over 100 artists contributed artwork-all for sale-to the exhibition. Artists from the first 100 Artists See Satan were invited back as well as new heathens.
With so many artists, and so many interpretations it is hard to pick a favorite. However, there are some unforgettable highlights: Kii Arens’ Lucifork, which was the illustration for a recent Devo concert poster, Beau Roulette, Sonya Palencia, Gary Musgrave, and Dana Harvey’s limited edition, already sold out, Hell in a Handbag.
Only time will tell how successful a fundraiser about Satan will be; even one based on a popular exhibition. Thankfully, this exhibition/fundraiser capitalizes on one of GCAC’s strengths: bringing together crowd-pleasing artists for a fun time. Last Saturday’s preview was well attended with two more receptions scheduled: Saturday, July 3, 7:00-10:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 7, 7:00-10:00 p.m.

OC's finest turned out for 'Art Shack' at the Laguna Art Museum (LAM), guest curated by Greg Escalante.
Mr. OC Art Blog himself was unable to make the event, so he asked me to take his place. He handed me a box with a wooden arrow screen printed with an invite to Hurley's SHACK ATTACK! exclusive event. Hurley & LAM hosted a 'meet and greet' for the artists and VIPs, 225 Forest Ave, Laguna Beach.
The first of the evening's festivities began around 4pm at Hurley's 225 Forest store. After braving PCH on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I finally made it to the parking lot only to catch artists Laurie Hassold and Jeff Gillette sneaking off. This is not boding well. . . but off I went.
There it was, the two-story Hurley store filled to the the gills with art aficionados, cool hair-cut kids, board shorts, and somebody's Mom.
I whip out my VIP pass in head for the bar.
The Art Shack Stars were given flower leis, so we could pick them out of the crowd like a tropical version of where's waldo.
There seemed to be a buzz coming from the 2nd floor, making it my next stop.
Art Shack inspired clothes are being customized by Hurley's crew of screen printing wizards. Artists were given a pair of white chucks, board shorts, and T-shirt to design.
You guys should check out the screen printing shop! They can customize your gear for just a few bucks more.

TOHUBOHU! Extreme (and I might add IMPROV) Theater Ensemble invites OC's very own George Herms to participate with their monthly performance, as the first of a series of invitations to artists. I was lucky enough to catch the show Friday night (no pics allowed) and it was amazing. I was however accompanied by Tony Kay from the Ca'Tony art space in Westwood and managed to whip out the camera at the reception.
Here's the scoop:
Herms brought artworks as props to be utilized during the performance. The theater company was composed of 6 stage performers, one artist providing the light and sound, two pups (they stole the show) and Rachel Rosenthal. The venue holds a max. of 35 people and is quite intimate. The audience is marched in at just the right moment, given an intro by Rachel herself and away they go. . .
The entirely unrehearsed and improvisational performance was amazingly musical, although no words were spoken. Sounds from props, body parts, or throats vibrated from the stage, it was a lovely experience. One you all should enjoy.

Keep posted for images from the Art Shack. . . Hurley held an awesome private pre-exhibition party Saturday night. The artists were given gift bags full of screen-print-ready booty, and were able to print them up right there in the shop. 225 Forest Ave, Laguna Beach. Go check it out!
