Top Ten Lies Told To Beginning Artists, Designers, & Illustrators

1. “Do this one cheap (or free) and we’ll make it up on the next one.”
2. “We never pay a cent until we see the final product.”
3. “Do this for us and you’ll get great exposure! The jobs will just pour in!”
4. On looking at sketches or concepts: “Well, we aren’t sure if we want to use you yet, but leave your material here so I can talk to my partner/investor/wife/clergy.”
5. “Well, the job isn’t CANCELLED, just delayed. Keep the account open and we’ll continue in a month or two.”
6. “Contract? We don’t need no stinking contact! Aren’t we friends?”
7. “Send me a bill after the work goes to press.”
8. “The last guy did it for XXX dollars.”
9. “Our budget is XXX dollars, firm.
10. “We are having financial problems. Give us the work, we’ll make some money and then we’ll pay you.” (VIA)

the HAMMER and UCLA's interdisciplinary journal of the arts, is accepting submissions for the 2009-2010 issue! The journal will consist of scholarly papers from several disciplines, art criticism, and original art work. Both undergraduates and graduates can submit to the journal.

MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2010.

GRAPHITE is looking for eloquent and innovative papers and art criticism written by undergraduates and graduates including but not limited to the fields of Art, Art History, Musicology, Architecture, Comparative literature, English, Philosophy, Women's Studies, Linguistics, Classics, European Studies, French and Francophone studies, Italian, German, East Asian Studies, World Arts and Cultures, Anthropology, and Sociology.

• Papers should be original work, properly cited using Chicago Style Manual, Humanities, using FOOTNOTE notation.

• Papers should be no longer than 2000 – 3000 words double-spaced.

• Images within the body of your essay should be accurately cited.

• Art Criticism should be 500 – 1000 words double-spaced. Examples of art criticism could include exhibition, concert, and art event reviews.

We are also interested in submissions of original student art work.

• Images should be high quality scans (300 DPI, at least 8 x 10 in TIFF or JPG format) and should be sent in CD format to:

Subtle Nudges @ Rothick art haus - Jan 8th

This Saturday night Rothick art haus opens a new show featuring artists Joshua Lawyer, Prince Parise and live painting by Jophen Stein. Music will be provided by DJ Old Boy. Opening starts at 7pm. 

In Case You Missed It!

 

In case you missed Instant Gratification last September at the Hibbleton Gallery, ISM  has expanded its celebration of the iconic Polaroid 600 series film and moved it to Copro Gallery at Bergamot Station.  Instant Gratification: Los Angeles is for one night only: Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 7:00pm-11:00pm.  Afterwards, beginning Sunday, work begins on the limited edition book, supplementing the exhibition with images and essays.  More than 200 artists submitted images, the amount of international polaroids has doubled, the art will be accompanied by live music from The Fling, Sam Outlaw, and The Roman Rye, and……ADMISSION IS FREE.
